What is the Core Skills Academy (ABE)
Customized Learning
This program serves native English speakers as
well as students coming out of the ESL program
who need to improve their skills before they
move on to high school or GED classes.
Prerequisite: minimum English Language
proficiency, Level 6.
The Academy is designed to help students get the
skills they need to reach their goals. Each
student works on the skill areas they personally
need based on an Individual Learning Plan. The
plan is developed by the learner and an
instructor together. Two instructors are in the
classroom for assistance. Both day and evening
sessions are offered. Core skills include
-
Math
-
Pre-algebra
-
Writing
-
Employability
-
Reading – comprehension, fluency,
vocabulary, alphabetics
The classroom is set up with a central study
hall area where students work independently on
assignments they have received in pull out
sessions.
There are also other learning centers in the
room where groups of students, working on the
same skill area, meet together with an
instructor for guided learning. Both English
and math skills are offered.
Instruction in each skill area is offered daily
in what is called “Pull Out Sessions”. Each
pull out session is offered at the same time
every day. Most sessions are for 45 minutes.
Some are 30 minutes. When you plan your
Individual Learning Plan you will plan which
pull out sessions you will attend.
In the pull out you will receive instruction and
assignments. When you are not working in a pull
out group you will be working in the study hall
area. All work is done in the classroom.
Materials may not be taken home. There is not
any homework, except for occasional practice
activities.
Enroll now to strengthen skills and get ready to
move upward in education and in a career; get a
job, keep a job.
The instructors will work with you to accomplish
small tasks along the way to reaching your big
goal. You will meet regularly with an
instructor to review your progress.
Student must take pre-assessment test and meet
with a counselor prior to enrollment.
Up to 16 high school credits may be earned in
the Academy.
